What Exactly Is Hair Toner?

What Is A Toner & Why You Should Use One On Your Hair?

Has your hair turned brassy? It sounds like you need a visit to your local REEDS Salon for some TLC!  It might be as simple as applying a toner to your hair.  Toner is a fabulous little product that neutralises brassy yellow and orange tones on bleached hair, leaving hair looking a more natural-looking colour. Toner can also make your hair look healthier and more shiny. At REEDS Hair Salons in Cambridge & Sawston we use the very best quality toners to ensure you always have a beautiful blonde hair colour when leaving our salons.

Important Things to Know About Toners

Toners alter the undertone of your hair colour, but they do not lift the shade.

Toners are meant to be applied to bleached or blonde hair and will not work on darker hair.

Toner can help you manipulate the shade of your blonde hair.

Toners can be used to add a fashion colour such as pink or lilac tones.

Toners can be used all over your hair, or in specific areas where you want to change the shade.

Toners wash out of your hair over time.

What Kind of Toner Should I Use?

Once you have had your hair lightened at our salons, your colourist will use an in-salon toner. Our toners are of the highest quality and are deisgned to minimise damage to coloured hair. Your REEDS colour expert will work with you using products during the colouring process which strengthen and repair damaged hair.  Using purple shampoo is a popular "at home" toning service, which is more gentle than ammonia-based toners. The great thing about purple shampoo is that you can wash your hair 2-3 times per week to preserve the tone of your blonde hair.

Toner Maintenance

Depending on your hair washing habits, you may have to visit REEDS for a toning service from 2-8 weeks after your colour service. You shouldn't wash your hair directly after toning because the colour will start to slip out.  The less frequently you wash your hair, the longer your colour will stay looking fresh. Not to mention, you really shouldn't be washing your hair every day; it strips out your natural oils and dries out your hair, which is not advised when you have been bleaching and toning your hair!

Condition Your Hair After a Toner

Any time you mess with bleach or ammonia, it's a great idea to show your hair some love too. Use a leave-in conditioner, or apply a hair mask every so often at home, and book in for a deep moisture treatment regularly at your local REEDS Hair Salon.
